    The year 2023 for Symphony Solutions was marked with us continuing our unwavering support for the people of Ukraine caught up in a war of aggression forced on their sovereignty by russia. Our charity initiatives are a result of our strong stance as a company, as well as numerous personal initiatives by Symphonians. 

    Symphony Solutions was able to support on company level numerous large-scale projects, from the Stand by Ukraine charity foundation to close cooperation with the Angel Fund and UNBROKEN rehabilitation center. 

    We continued providing our support and expertise to RebuildUA. Since the start of the project, 1,314,443+ infrastructure objects were analyzed and added to the database. 

    While the focus on Ukraine remains strong, we always remember our global commitment to supporting gender equality, education, and much more. 

    Our charity initiatives in Macedonia extended to supporting SOS Children’s Village, an educational initiative for children and teens without parental care, as well as Glas Protiv Nasilstvo charity organization that provides services to women and children who survived gender-based and domestic violence. 

    We launched an NFT collection directing all the proceeds towards supporting the women in Ukraine with the NGO Центр “Жіночі перспективи”. 

    We prioritized the self-care and wellbeing of Symphonians. A newly introduced Benefits A la Carte program supports Symphonians in their pursuit of a healthy lifestyle, both mental and physical. 

    In 2023, we used our athletic affection turning it into a global charity initiative, having launched two charity races Distance for a Difference. Symphonians and their families around the world covered a total of 10,275 km and raised over 600K UAH that were donated to the charity organization “With an Angel on a Shoulder”.

    Symphony Solutions continues its mission of supporting injured Ukrainian defenders as part of our collaboration with the Unbroken rehabilitation center in Lviv, Ukraine. This time, we are sharing the story of the serviceman Ruslan Kapusta with the call sign ‘The Sailor.’ Despite losing his hand while in Bakhmut, Ruslan is now ready to return to the frontlines with his new prosthetic hand. 

    Ruslan ‘The Sailor’ accepted our invitation to meet up with us and share his incredible story and positive attitude. He told us about the personal sacrifices of each and every Ukrainian defending Ukraine in the frontlines. Ruslan was eager to talk about returning to his brothers in battle, certain that his new prosthetic will come “in handy”. He is already comfortable using his ‘Terminator hand’, having mastered its functionality almost instantaneously. Once back in the army, Ruslan wants to continue working with communication equipment, including Starlinks and servers, providing these crucial services of modern warfare.

    When the war started, Ruslan volunteered with local communities and the territorial defense brigades while preparing to carry out his plan to serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but not before his wife and two small children were able to escape russian occupation in their hometown of Nova Kakhovka. Once Ruslan knew that his immediate family was safe, his next objective was to serve his country. A pacifist at heart, Ruslan could offer his brains and experience, having worked at sea for 11 years and specializing in radio and satellite communications. 

    Ksenia Kobryn, Chief Operating Officer at Symphony Solutions, is very involved in all our charitable initiatives and oftentimes is the first to get in touch with the defenders whom we are supporting. She personally contacted Ruslan to see to it that he could start his rehabilitation at the Unbroken Rehabilitation Center as soon as possible. Later on, Ksenia helped Ruslan reunite with his wife and children in Lviv.

Many of you were following us on this important mission and cheering for our numerous charity initiatives, whether we were providing shelter to war refugees, or hosting charity auctions in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

    However, could we have hoped to take part in a real-life miracle? Yet, this is what happened when earlier this year one of the monitors donated by Symphony Solutions took a hit saving the life of a Ukrainian defender, currently defending his country in the frontlines. We have invited to Symphony Solutions Lviv location chaplain Ruslan Tsekhmeister and charity foundation volunteer Stephania Khomiak, who personally took part in setting up an unlikely miracle in the frontlines.     How Symphony Solutions Teamed up with Angel Fund 

    It started in a rather trivial way, when Symphony Solutions Lviv office was left with a lot of spare equipment after its downsizing due to going fully virtual. After some of the devices were sold in a charity auction or purchased by Symphonians, Anton Sardyga, IT Specialist at Symphony Solutions, noticed that there were still many left in storage collecting dust. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, policies were put in place, which made it possible to collect and donate equipment. Anton didn’t know how to do it exactly, but he personally knew Stephania and was aware of her work for the charity fund. 

    Anton and Stephania formed a request, organized the first donation, and carried on. Gradually, we built a strong network of support.

    How a Computer Monitor Took a Bullet for Ukraine

    The equipment donated by Symphony Solutions diligently served the 106th Brigade of the Slaviansk TRO, stationed in Avdiivka, for barely two weeks, when an attack happened. The place where the military were positioned was considered relatively set. Then one day the russians detected the positions and started an attack, demolishing the street where they were stationed. Sergeant Duke from Odesa was working at the moment and even captured it on camera. The hit wave shifted the monitor and took the piece of shrapnel, protecting sergeant. Later, chaplain Ruslan received a message from Duke, retelling the story. Startled at first, he asked if they kept the monitor. Having left the site of the attack by that time, Duke indeed took care to bring the monitor as a keepsake and even signed it with a marker. The lifesaving monitor is now kept in a warehouse and most likely will be sold for charity. 

    Sergeant Duke volunteered to join the territorial defense units. He has been fighting alongside his brothers in battle since 2014, some even went through captivity. These people are in the very front of the fight, protecting their homes. These are patriots who know exactly what they are fighting for. After the lifesaving incident, Duke got married to a priest’s daughter and returned to service, now fighting near Avdiivka.

    As a response to this paradigm shift, Symphony Solutions took a bold step in 2022 by transitioning to a fully virtual company, although not without its fair share of challenges. Let’s explore how Virtual Communities came into being, where we are standing in our transformation today, and what the future may hold. 

    Pre-Virtual Community Era 

    Symphony Solutions is a Cloud and AI-driven IT company with headquarters in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, working with over 35 international clients and virtual teams of experts now present in over 20 locations. 

    The journey to a fully virtual mode of working started at Symphony Solutions way before the world health crisis of 2019 made it a necessity with the presentation of a Symphony Anywhere virtual office. For a while, we operated in this hybrid mode, where we had office locations in Ukraine, Macedonia, Poland, and even headquarters in Boston, USA to cover a wide geographic reach to service current and potential clients. Symphony Anywhere became the gateway to get onboard professionals from all around the world. 

    Operating in a virtual landscape necessitates a reimagining of corporate dynamics, including interpersonal and team interactions, as well as the integration of corporate culture, which now primarily revolves around project-based teams. 

    Moreover, cultivating a virtual culture demands fresh approaches to communication, team leadership, and fostering a sense of unity and belonging. Recognizing this need, Symphony Solutions has embraced the power of communities as a vital tool for running a virtual company and promoting engagement.     To facilitate informal communication, we have introduced a groundbreaking platform Viva Engage which became our internal social network. Furthermore, any individual within our organization has the liberty to create their own band, encouraging an environment of inclusivity and self-expression.

    Challenges in Implementing a Virtual Culture 

    Of course, implementing virtual bands and switching entirely to the hybrid mode was a considerable challenge to all of us. This process could be rightfully called a transformation, which required changing the work environment and the mindset. 

    Mindset shift. The main difficulty in implementing virtual communities was the need to facilitate a change in mindset. There are Symphonians who support Viva Engage platform and get excited at the prospect of building new bonds with their colleagues in a virtual setting. Then there are people still in the process of accepting it. The company events, both technical and engagement ones, have already proven to be quite a success. 

    Finding the right work environment. A lesser of two ‘evils’, figuring out the technical side of the solution was a challenge of its own. We had initially established online channels of communication for efficient collaboration within teams. However, those weren’t enough for a more radical solution. After juggling multiple channels of communication while in search of the right platform, we gradually shifted to Viva Engage and tied up all loose ends. 

    What Was Accomplished, What Comes Next 

    Symphony Solutions Virtual Communities have been a part of Symphonians’ lives for almost a year now. Recently, they have become the main hub of all non-project-related communication, offering a balanced mix of professional and leisurely conversations. Here are our accomplishments so far:

    • Symphonyzer events with up to 40 participants

     Unique activities presented in Viva Engage can always keep the conversation going: 

    • AI Challenge is an ongoing contest that’s found its place in the dedicated AI Band. Symphonians are encouraged to share their findings in AI tools and ways to apply them to their everyday work and life, and even get a prize for the best cases. 
    • United by Music is one of the favorite activities in the Music Lovers Band. Symphonians share their favorite songs and tracks, which are then compiled in themed Spotify playlists, such as Release Deadline OST, tunes for running, etc. 
    • Charity initiatives. For the time being, the main lot of our charity initiatives are concentrated in the Ukraine Band. Since the war in Ukraine has in a way affected most Symphonians, we are coming together to support friends, colleagues, and good acquaintances, currently protecting our peace in the frontlines. 

    Of course, we never forget what it really means to be a Symphonian, which is why the Music Lovers Band quickly became one of our favorite communities with over 250 messages posted since its beginning. 

    Since the launch of virtual communities, many of our internal fundraisers and charity activities found their place on Viva Engage. One of the sweetest fundraising campaigns we’ve recently held at Symphony Solutions was to support our colleague currently serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. 

    Today, we proudly present Symphony Bands, each epitomizing a safe haven for connecting and sharing thoughts with fellow enthusiasts who share a common passion or interest. Through this unity of purpose, these bands instill a profound sense of togetherness and intimacy. 

    The Next Steps for Virtual Communities 

    Now around 50% of Symphonians are using Viva Engage, and almost 75% participate in technical and engagement events and workshops. These are the results of 10 months’ work. Like now, people who are in the bands, they know more people, know the company better, feel more comfortable and have the vibe of Symphony Solutions. The bands help newcomers onboard easier.

  • 2D Shape Drag and Drop in WPF using MVVM, PRISM and SQLite 

    2D Shape Drag and Drop in WPF using MVVM, PRISM and SQLite 

    In this article, the goal is to show how to implement drag-and-drop of 2D shapes using MVVM pattern with PRISM and SQLite database. 2D Shape Drag and Drop in WPF using MVVM, PRISM, and SQLite” involves building a graphical user interface (GUI) for a desktop application in Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). The goal of this project is to implement a drag-and-drop feature for 2D shapes, which is a common requirement in many applications. The application will be built using the MVVM (Model-View-ViewModel) design pattern, which is a widely used design pattern in WPF and Silverlight applications. MVVM separates the presentation logic from the business logic, making the code easier to maintain and test. The project will also make use of Microsoft Prism, which is a set of libraries that help developers build WPF, .Net MAUI, and Silverlight applications that are loosely coupled, maintainable, and testable. Prism provides an implementation of MVVM and provides additional services such as event aggregation and module management. Finally, the application will use SQLite as the database technology for storing data.  

    2D Shape Drag and Drop in WPF 

    The drag-and-drop facilities provided by WPF are designed to be highly flexible and customizable to support a wide variety of drag-and-drop scenarios. Drag-and-drop supports manipulating objects within a single application or between different applications. Dragging-and-dropping between WPF applications and other Windows applications is also fully supported. The requirement for 2D Shape Drag and Drop in WPF stems from the need for a user-friendly interface for manipulating and arranging shapes in the application. This functionality will enable users to easily arrange shapes according to their needs, improving the overall usability and user experience of the application. 

    MVVM design pattern 

    MVVM is a design pattern that separates the presentation logic from the business logic, improving the maintainability and testability of the code. By using MVVM, the application will have a clean and well-structured architecture, making it easier to understand, modify, and extend in the future. This pattern ensures the UI of the application and the underlying presentation and business logic is separated into three separate classes: the view, which encapsulates the UI and UI logic; the view model, which encapsulates presentation logic and state; and the model, which encapsulates the application’s business logic and data. 

    Microsoft Prism 

    Microsoft Prism is a framework that provides a set of libraries and guidance for building WPF applications using MVVM. It helps to simplify the implementation of complex MVVM scenarios and provides a set of common components and services that can be reused throughout the application. 

    Implementation of Microsoft Prism in the application 

    In the 2D Shape Drag and Drop application, Microsoft Prism will be used to implement the MVVM design pattern, handle navigation, and manage the dependency injection. This will improve the overall structure and maintainability of the code. 

    SQLite Database 

    SQLite is an open-source, lightweight, self-contained, and zero-configuration relational database management system. It is a popular choice for embedded systems, mobile devices, and web applications because of its small size, low memory footprint, and high performance. SQLite supports the SQL standard, including transactions, ACID compliance, and multiple concurrent connections. It can be used to store, organize, and retrieve data in a structured manner, making it a powerful tool for managing data in applications. The SQLite database can be used in C#.NET applications with the help of ADO.NET, LINQ, and Entity Framework. In the context of the project “2D Shape Drag and Drop in WPF using MVVM, Microsoft Prism, and Sqlite,” the Sqlite database would be used to store and manage the data related to the shapes being dragged and dropped on the WPF canvas. It is ideal for use in desktop applications and can be used to store and manage the data for the 2D Shape Drag and Drop application.  

    Implementation of Sqlite in the application 

    In the 2D Shape Drag and Drop application, Sqlite will be used to store and manage the data related to the shapes and their arrangements. The SQLite database can be managed using ADO.NET, which enables developers to interact with the database using C# code. 

    Drag and Drop functionality  

    The drag-and-drop functionality will allow users to select a shape, drag it to a desired location in the user interface, and drop it to complete the arrangement. This functionality will be implemented in the WPF application using the MVVM design pattern and Microsoft Prism. 

    Implementation of the drag-and-drop functionality 

    The drag-and-drop functionality will be implemented using event handlers in the ViewModel and event triggers in the View. The ViewModel will handle the logic for the dragging and dropping of shapes, while the View will display the shapes and handle the user interactions. The data related to the shapes and their arrangements will be stored in the SQLite database and managed using Entity Framework Core. 

    Steps to demonstrate the implementation of 2D drag and drop shapes using MVVM, Prism, and SQLite 

    • Set up the project using the MVVM pattern and Prism framework. 
    • Create a SQLite database to store the shapes and their positions. 
    • Create a shape model class that includes properties such as shape type, position, and size. 
    • Create a view model that interacts with the shape model and the SQLite database. This view model should have methods for adding, updating, and deleting shapes. 
    • Create a view that displays the shapes and allows users to drag and drop them. 
    • Use the view model to update the shape model and SQLite database when a shape is moved. 
    • Implement the drag-and-drop functionality using events or commands, depending on the framework you are using. 

    Note that this is a high-level overview and you will need to do further research and implementation to achieve the full solution.

    The following Software development patterns were adopted for the development of this test project 

    • Structural Pattern: Adapter Pattern, Decorator Pattern  
    • Behavioral Patterns: Strategy Pattern, Command Pattern, Observer Pattern etc. 
    • Creational Patterns: Singleton Pattern 

    Development Approach 

    Object Oriented Development Approach was adopted to keep the implementation process of the project clean, easily maintainable, and readable. 

    GUI Descriptions 

    Start-Up Window 

    • The application start-up Window contains a toolbar, Toolbox, drawing Canvas and Items Pane
    • The toolbox contains the shown WPF controls

    DRAGGING SHAPES TO CANVAS 

    The user should be able to drag an item from the toolbox and place it on the drawing canvas. The selected item should be placed on the user’s drop location.

    The enables the user to select any item on the canvas by clicking it, then a blue rectangle will appear around any selected item(s) and selected item(s) can also be dragged around the canvas.

    STROKE COLOR 

    The Stroke Color tool on the toolbar was used to change the border color of the selected item on the drawing canvas.

    FILL COLOR 

    The Fill Color tool on the toolbar as shown below was used to change the fill color of the selected item(s) on the drawing canvas.

    ITEMS PANE 

    The Items Pane displays a list of shapes. A shape is only shown if it is present on the drawing canvas. Each shape was only displayed once on the Items Pane irrespective of how many times it appears on the drawing canvas.

    SELECT FIRST ITEM 

    A user can select several items on the drawing canvas by selecting the appropriate shape on the Items Pane and selecting an option from the Selection Criteria tool on the toolbar as shown in Figure below. Select the first item: When this option is active, the first item of the selected shape that was dropped on the drawing canvas is selected.

    When this option is active, the last item of the selected shape that was dropped on the drawing canvas is selected

    If the total number of the selected shape is even, two shapes should be selected. If the total number of the selected shape is odd, one shape will be selected

    SAVE ITEMS 

    A user can save the drawing by clicking the ‘Save’ button. When this happens, the current drawing is saved to a SQLite database.

    A user can load a saved drawing by clicking the “Load”button in order to populate the drawing Area with all the saved shapes in the SQLite Database.

    The use of MVVM, PRISM, and SQLite in this project provides a well-structured and maintainable codebase, making it easier to implement the drag-and-drop feature for 2D shapes in WPF.
